EyeBorg: The Bionic Video Eye Project

EyeBorg: The Bionic Video Eye Project

By Nicko Margolies on March 10, 2009

Rob Spence is a filmmaker who lost an eye in a gun accident and is attempting to create a video camera and wireless transmitter in the place of his missing eyeball.  The film he is working on is called “Project Eyeborg” and he has gathered a group of interested techies to work on the project in their spare time.  It seems quite similar to the art project of Tanya Vlach, but Mr. Spence seems to be farther along and has gathered more media attention.  Scientists are also working on restoring sight to the blind through a camera connected to the brain, but that is a far more advanced and experimental project.

The final documentary is intended to raise the privacy concerns about the thousands of surveillance cameras around the world and in the process the project is rapidly advancing the technology of miniaturizing personal eye-sized video devices.  The team has hit a number of snags in the process but they are continuing to work through the difficulties of optical technology.  Check out a brief preview of the documentary in progress that was presented at a media conference:
