Jugaad & Morro: Design With What You Have

By Dan Gould on March 16, 2009

Core 77 points out two remarkable design projects that were inspired by constraints and less-than-ideal conditions.

First is the Morro sofa, which is made out of lots of little cubes salvaged out of foam waste from discarded traditional sofas. Morro is a slang word for the favelas in Rio, which are hillsides covered in houses made out of whatever is available. The second piece is a public art installation, and shade source named Jugaad, which is made out of old pieces of oil cans.

They explain the admirable idea behind Jugaad:

“‘Jugaad’ is an Indian term that refers to attaining any objective with the available resources at hand. It gives new life to objects discarded as valueless and reminds us that the familiar is not necessarily known.
