Pic: Our Strong Economy?

We spotted this American Apparel ad on the back of a local NYC publication. We suspect it has less to do with a reversal of the company’s provocative campaigns of the past and more to do with the current economic conditions. Foregoing the depiction of a scantily clad model for once, American Apparel instead introduces us to the wholesome image of Willie, “A valued member of our Fabric Control Team.”

With a total of 21 stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn – one location (pictured at right) recently opening up down the street from the PSFK offices – American Apparel could stand to benefit from increased sales relating to positive press as opposed to just any press.

Despite your feelings on how the controversial business might market itself, much of their lasting success can be attributed to their integrated model. An excerpt from the above ad reminds us of the values behind the clothing – regardless how little actually constitutes an outfit:

We have not only had a positive impact on the economy, but also our community in LA and worldwide, offering support for local initiatives and most prominently Immigrants’ and Gay Rights. We believe that business can be used to bring about social change.

But the real question remains, are you buying any of it?
