We’ve very excited to have Dr Jay Parkinson of Hello Health join us at PSFK Conference New York on April 2. Along with Sean Khozin (Hello Health), Richard Fine (Help Remedies) and moderator Colin Nagy (Attention), Jay will offer his insights on improving communication in the healthcare industry, and between brands and users in general, through the incorporation of technology and social media.

First, who are you and what do you do?

My name is Jay Parkinson and I’m a physician who lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I was trained at Johns Hopkins in preventive medicine and pediatrics. I realized just what a mess the health care system is, with messy delivery processes and frustrating, expensive reimbursement methods. I figured the whole thing could change for the simpler.

I saw that my patients and friends in my neighborhood communicate very differently from how the health care industry does. I decided that I could be a better doctor to them if I communicated like they did: through the Internet and their iPhones. Soon, I had a functioning practice, incorporating my website and house calls with email, IM, SMS, video chat, and PayPal.

I’m currently working with a team to develop Hello Health. It’s an online platform that connects you with your doctor via office visits, email, IM, and video. We’re doctors interested in fixing you up, keeping you healthy, and making your life simple. We’ll talk with you online and at our offices, just to give you the personal attention you deserve— when and how you need it.

You’ll be speaking on our “Building Healthy Brands With Heart” panel. In one paragraph, can you explain what themes and ideas you hope to touch upon during the discussion?

I’ll be talking about the return of customer service to the medical industry and how enhancing communication will restore a new and better doctor-patient relationship. I’ll also talk about using the internet to deliver health care and how that enables a true partnership to develop to optimize an individual’s health.
