Vessel: Half Jacket, Half Tent

Justin Gargasz’s “Vessel” is a coat with a secret. Tucked inside the back of the jacket is a one person tent. The expandable clothing lets the wearer pop out instant accommodations wherever they may be. Set up is as easy as anchoring the front of the tent to a stationary vertical object, like a tree, and staking out the four corners.

For being such a utilitarian piece of gear, the Vessel cuts a surprisingly inconspicuous profile. The tent section is coiled in such a way that it’s barely noticeable. It’s also reversible, and can be worn as a satchel if temperatures get too hot. A useful example of multi-purpose design.

  1. I feel like our expectations are growing – designs should be modular AND multi-purpose. Getting more use out of objects that change, depending upon our needs.

  2. that is awesome, where can I get one?

  3. Dude, sign me up.

  4. More often than not a lot of these modular, multi-items are less useful than they seem since they just end up getting turned into one of their modes and left that way. But this one I can actually see being a possible item for someone like a daypacker or ultralight hiker.

  5. this will be handy for all the upcoming homeless folks as the economy continues to implode.

  6. i’m bying 5, for my husban & mee & my 3 illegities.

  7. I love the idea of this jacket that turns into a one man tent! I’m definitely going to keep my eye on psfk.com.

  8. What is the weight of the vessel?

  9. Its not a tent just because you stretch out/up the top of a sleeping bag. Yea, more of a sleeping bag.

  10. Yes, but then you are left diggin in the snow next to a fucking tree in your bare t-shirt.

Not for weather where one would actually need a good jacket.

  11. I think this is great, but like the previous comment… the only flaw I see is that when it is cold at night, you don’t have your coat anymore. hmmm.

  12. hell i think it would make a great backpacking tent. you dont need a lot of clothing for that, and anything you de need, you pack in. beats bringing poles and such

  13. Really neat! The jacket isn’t the best-looking article of clothing, but it could be a lifesaver if a storm hit during a mountain hike.

  14. Pass em out by the 10,000’s to the homeless!

  15. What happens if it rains?

  16. To the people complaining about maybe needing a jacket in cold weather; did you miss the part where it says “can be worn as a satchel?” Just bring your own jacket make it into a satchel.

  17. make it into a satchel*

  18. very nice, like it :D AND I WANTed now:)
wheer i kan buy it??? eny one??

  19. very cool designs, really like it

  20. Where can I get one, let me know.

  21. would also be great as a backup tent- I mean, you’re away from your bassecamp or out for a day and get lost, could come in handy. nothing’s a substitute for survival skills and preparedness though.

also would be good if you were homeless- would love to know where to get one

  22. I like the idea. They should be purchased by charities and organisations dealing with homeless people to give them those tents for free

  23. Excellent
