Platoon Kunsthalle hopes to become an incubator for new ideas and a center for the growth and development of creative subcultures in Asia. The new building opened in the Cheongdam area of Seoul on April 11th and is made up of 28 stacked cargo containers, a nod to how subcultures can travel the world. The entire building can be taken apart and rebuilt anywhere in the world.

The facility functions as a communications base for anybody interested in creative fields like street art, graphic design, fashion, video art, programming, music, club culture, political activism etc. The intention is to use the space to host a range of activities like exhibitions, movie nights, concerts and multimedia performances, workshops, discussion panels and special events.

Platoon Kunsthalle will also offer four scholarship programs to young upcoming artists.

  1. I find the idea of “forced” or “on purpose” creative spaces a little strange. I applaud the importance Seoul is putting on creativity but surely, by its nature, creativity needs to be more spontaneous, uncontrolled?

We see the attempts of multi-million dollar ad agencies to facilitate ‘creative spaces’ all the time. The results speak for themselves.

I’d be interested in reading an interview with the designers/architects to get an understand of what makes a space creative or conducive to creativity.
