Membership, reward and loyalty cards are available from almost every major merchant and now there may be an easy way to lighten your wallet or purse load. CardStar is an iPhone app designed to store and retrieve cards which can be scanned from the barcode the app creates from your reward number. The merchant list boasts over 130 companies and currently works in the US, Canada and the UK.
The idea isn’t particularly new, but the app is free (for now) and neatly designed. Be warned that the checkout counter may have significantly reduced patience for your desire to show off the app along with the added difficulty of getting a barcode to scan from a smudgy screen. It certainly saves the hassle of forgetting a card when you’re already at the gym or with the travel agent, so give it try.

This would be even more awesome if it linked to local circulars…and then when users save the coupons, they can register for the loyalty program.

I have done this with emailed store coupons that I have forgotten to print out. I am wary of having a scanner used on my phone lest it cause some kind of damage, however, so I just have the cashier manually enter the number below the barcode.
