The BBC makes a bi-polar point about the need to edit social media feeds while at the same time giving their audience immediate access to them:

"What really stands out is the range of sources, voices and angles to be looked into. There's no hierarchy: everything's on merit, and there is of course a new set of challenges for our staff - chiefly editorial challenges, as well as a kind of chase as social media services appear and disappear in what The Times' Judith Evans describes as "an electronic game of cat and mouse".

I've written here before about our use of Twitter in another context, and spoke then about the need for us (BBC News) to exercise care and to check information before publishing it as fact - and that remains true. We'll check anything we want to include in our account of what is actually happening. But we also want to link what we do with the flow of discussion, links, rumours and reports which is providing another channel for people following the story. "

Such insightful analysis-- but I WOULD argue that "established news organizations still could play an important role in editing and evaluating the news streaming over the web - what Tweets should we be listening to, which ones should we trust for example." I'm willing to wait a day to get "old" news from intelligent, unbiased (to the extent possible) people I trust at the NY Times rather than having to sift through the chaos of Twitter and HuffPo. But I guess it all depends on how interested and engaged you are in the news in question, right? If it was happening in my city I'm sure I'd be working the hashtags

There is a fantastic graphic novel called "Shooting Wars' that tackles this very topic with wit, artistic integrity and intelligence.

Good article - I would add that aggregator sites like Fark.com have jumped on this and have been a great source of info sharing and conversation on the topic

Re. Google - This post does suggest high use of Google Talk - http://www.switched.com/2009/06/15/iran-protests-via-twitter-cnn-is-silent/ - but not the search engine itself
