This video for We Have Band stands out with its use of face paint animation. The video was made up of 4,816 separate stills, where each frame had to be re-painted, shot, wiped off, and redrawn.
One question we have is why was it made by Wieden+Kennedy? Creatives Ida Gronblom and Fabian Berglund from the agency directed the video and knowing W+K’s wiliness it does make you fear that this is just one big ad for a cosmetics company…

Piers – you run a nice blog, not a rumor mongering media powerhouse. that’s what makes you so good.
We made it because we love the band, we had an idea we were proud of, and we want to make the best work of our lives…ads, whatever.
That may sound naive. But it’s the truth.
Play nice. It suits you better.

Thank you for the comment, Martin.
Listen, I’m still left from the Nokia incident thinking W+K took the piss. And therefore that colors my view of all the work W+K put out from that point forward. I thought the video was interesting so we mentioned it. That said, I have every right to make the second point to.
Our job is not to have a nice blog. Our job is to throw up ideas and sometimes opinion for people to react to in an attempt to inspire people to make things better. And sometimes we use the art of the swipe to get people to react.
If an ad agency makes a music video, I don’t quite understand what the issue is with me pointing out that it’s a little odd. If you think it’s unfair remember that I am currently biased against the work of your agency (as I mentioned before) plus it’s not as if the ad industry is really innocent in creating perceptions that they use underhand measures to sell stuff.
Therefore asking me to play nice means that you want me to lie down and let the ad industry get away with a lot of shit (even if there are agencies like W+K who are probably leading a positive fight).

Go Piers… ;-)

I’m sure Martin’s comment is true. They’re marketing themselves — W+K’s passion for creative execution is the product they’re selling here. As well they should. And you, Piers, helped them do it. So Martin — YOU should play nice too and say thankyou to Mr. Fawkes.

Who cares if it was an ad? I personally like seeing ad agencies start making material that is fun and brings quality/value back to the consumer.

If Martin says it was out of love, why shouldn’t creative people do what they do best – create? the fact that W+K produced the music video for a band they liked, is kudos to the companies philosophy towards internal creative development. more companies should allow their creatives to do the same.

why shouldn’t creative people create for the sake of it? Kudos to W+K for doing such things as its a great philosophy in creative development.

Perki – I have no problem with an ad agency making creative endeavors. I do have a problem with them telling me not to comment about them.
