Artrain Brings Mobility to Museums

Artrain Brings Mobility to Museums

By Nicko Margolies on July 6, 2009

Artrain has spent almost forty years touring art and cultural exhibits across America by train and just recently unveiled a new design for trucks to convert into mobile museums. The organization’s goal to bring art to more urban environments and access places not possible by rail meant creating a new facility to transport the works.  This mission brought about the creation of the new Mobile Museum Units built on multiple semi-trailers designed by Switch.

Starting in 2010, these trucks will hit the open road and start a 21-month tour involving 150 artists including sculptors, photographers, musicians and more.  A single unit can expand into 1,000 square feet of exhibition space and easily combine to create expansive spaces capable of accommodating rich creative environments.  Check out this neat video of the trailers transforming into the full size exhibit, complete with a gift shop and multiple spaces.
