(Capsule) Show to Take Over LES

(Capsule) Show to Take Over LES

By Laura Feinstein on July 17, 2009

It takes alot to make New Yorkers excited about something, but right now the NYC fashion and culture set is buzzing with news of the great events (capsule) New York has planned for next week, coinciding with their upcoming men’s fashion trade show at the Angel Orensanz Center on the Lower East Side.

Today marks the commencement of the Superfuture x (capsule) neighborhood network, in which neighboring LES indie shops including Pixie Market, Gargyle, Alife, and Assembly, will be offering special deals and discounts in honor of men’s market week. For more information and a complete list of participating brands, check out urban/web/ travel guide -extraordinaire  Superfuture and the folks at  (capsule).  In addition to providing an amazing space for indie and contemporary designers to show their wares, (capsule) will also be sponsoring a gallery called Means of Production which will run from July 19-21st at The Ludlow.

According to the press release:

The event will showcase the idea of community and commerce, as creative minds set up shop in a raw space on the ground floor of The Ludlow, one of the Lower East Side’s newest and most innovative apartment buildings. Means of Production will be an experiential gallery where visitors can participate in creating culture and memories. The three day event, designed to examine the methods of making art, will showcase illustrators, craftsmen, musicians and designers in the act of producing.

The Gallery will be open Sunday-Tuesday, July 19-21, 2009  from 1-6pm, with a  6-9pm Band showcase , and will feature exhibits by:  Mike Perry (the Brooklyn-based artist will set up a ‘zine production center complete with piles of scrap paper, copy machines and old fashioned glue sticks and tape), Dossier Magazine (the bi-annual arts and culture journal incorporating fashion, photography,  creative writing ) curating a retail space, Daniel Jackson, (creative director of BBlessing) creating a large scale sculpture on site, Bowery Lane Bicycles will featuring new bike styles, and photography, Palladium Boots presenting recent photos by Peter Sutherland., Live t-shirt screenprinting featuring graphics from an array of indie designers (including THECAST, Kid Robot, Public School and Ryder Robison), Indie band showcases curated by Wierd Records, Modular Records and Evident Records, and large scale live painting by Ryder Robison and David Senna.

While this may be a lot to take in, one  to especially take note of is  artist Mike Perry, who was commissioned by the creators of (capsule) to think up images centered upon the idea of community (one of the main themes of this year’s (capsule) show). Perry was asked to illustrate his vision of “our universal landscape, reflecting on all the components that come into play when creating a line.” Done in watercolor, with a whimsical almost Picasso-esque style, Perry’s vision of the future and community is, rather than “change”,  a present you can believe in. To hear about some of Perry’s influences and how he came to be part of the (capsule) family, check out this interview with him on the site.

In the meantime, PSFK will be covering the events all next week, and if you are in NYC be sure to check out some of the great men’s fashion week offerings!
