Public radio has traditionally been one of the few outposts on the AM/FM dial for independent and innovative programming. The advent of streaming radio and podcasts has allowed a wider audience to enjoy a broad range of local content whenever they please- and now mobile devices are making this even simpler to achieve.
The Public Radio Player is a new, free app available for your iPhone that aggregates live streaming and pre-recorded public radio shows from stations across America.
It contains all current and future programming schedules, and a search function that covers podcasts, live streams, and text show summaries.
The app was created by the Public Radio Exchange (PRX), an online distribution marketplace for public radio programming, with cooperation from larger organizations within the medium- NPR, Public Radio International, and The Corporation For Public Broadcasting.
The option of easy accessibility to local content should be a positive for the stations involved, and the effect this app has on listenership will be worth watching out for.
