Rental Car Rally Revs Up Once Again

Rental Car Rally Revs Up Once Again

By Allison Mooney on July 28, 2009

On August 21, the third invocation of the Rental Car Rally will be rolling from NYC to Detroit. The brainchild of  StreetWars‘ “Supreme Commander” and Steve Bryant of Wiimbledon, the rally is more Mermaid Parade than NASCAR–check out our post and some photos from their San Francisco to Yuma expedition.

There is no set route, but each team must hit pre-defined checkpoints, which include an abandoned ghost town in Pennsylvania with a mine fire burning beneath the streets and a drive thru strip club. The motley crew will then spend the night partying in a downtown Detroit hotel casino before setting back the following day.

According to Bryant, there are three types of tickets for the event:

  • Basic (entry plus briefcase full of fireworks, smoke bombs, condoms, chaw.)
  • The Captain Chaos (the above plus exec hotel suite, steak dinner, stripper in your suite.)
  • The Jason Statham (all the above, plus a syringe of pure human adrenaline. Seriously.)

The only rules: Don’t speed. Each team must provide photographic evidence of each checkpoint, and scoring is based on three factors: lowest odometer reading, best team style (both costume and vehicle), and freelance “feats of daring-do”.

The grand prize—awarded more for style than speed—is $2000 plus a golden gas pump.
