The Flavorpill 50

By Allison Mooney on July 27, 2009

The Flavorpill 50 are “the most respected event creators in every one of its major markets”—NYC, LA, Chicago and San Francisco. For these select venues and cultural institutions, Flavorpill has opened up their platform. Each of the 50 has its own custom page to upload information about its latest exhibitions and/or one-off events, publish them, and see their content integrated into the website. They can also create interactive giveaways (prizes including VIP passes, season membership, and complimentary cocktails) and tie them to events.

“We’ve created simple functionality for cultural institutions that allows them to set up shop on Flavorpill and speak directly with our audience, an active group of culture seekers,”

said Mark Mangan, co-founder of Flavorpill. “We’ve also expanded the range of our cultural coverage beyond our weekly curated email.”

This is a smart move on Flavorpill’s part as it fully leverages their most important asset-their audience. They are essentially owning part of the social network presence for these events and institutions. In New York, these venues run the gamut from highbrow (Guggenheim, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center) to lowbrow (Joe’s Pub, Pianos, Comix). By getting their own sandbox in Flavorpill’s virtual playground, the 50 get one-to-one access to young, affluent and influential readers. But the hope is that—rather then pimping out its audience—Flavorpill will actually be able to provide a more targeted and relevant advertising experience.

The move also makes it a lot easier for Flavorpill to stay on top of the 24/7 editorial cycle and ensure that their writers don’t exclude any Pill-worthy events. In this way, it’s almost a new spin on the group blog concept. Pick the contributors, then endorse their posts based on your editorial judgment. In the meantime, Flavorpill will continue to do original content-they just launched its new daily blog, Flavorwire, last October.
