I wrote a blog post on this subject based on this article and several others. Journalists must embrace social technologies and adapt their articles and posts to a world of summarized posts like Twitter and the ability to take advantage of infinite internet space. If they do this, they can deliver far more depth and insight than ever before unencumbered by the limitations of paper media. They can also take advantage of video and unlimited photos or art work to extend the story line and make it a far more compelling and engaging read.

Here is my blog post: http://socialmediaecosystem.blogspot.com/2009/07/voices-in-technology-for-turnaround.html

Thank you for an excellent post.

“Journalism will inevitably be a multi-media, multi-platform discipline."

Newspaper publishers I've spoken to echo this strategy and are looking for ways to cross-promote via Social Media Networks.

SocMed can deliver pageviews (which drive revenue) while they figure out a more sustainable Digital Business Model. In the meantime, the Printed Page collects the Local Tax from loyal SMBs (and keeps the die hard Boomer set happy).

Perhaps News Organizations can make money expanding their product from news reporting to Conversation Marketing or another intriguing Yet-to-Be-Thought-Of Service...

Twitter is already ahead of Google in terms of immediacy. You look there first for a breaking story. But journalism will always need paid professionals and newspapers still have some brand credibility. I think micropayments via isps for content evaluated on a page rank type basis would give good revenue to the NYTs of the world and also compensate lowly bloggers who do make a contribution reporting, analyzing and crticizing.

The future of journalism is easily shareable articles a la Facebook & Twitter connect. News sources will continue to stand out by integrating these features into their websites and iPhone apps. Easier sharing = more traffic & revenue.
