Wurst Menswear Label Bridges Fashion and Dance Music
Perhaps in an ingenuous ploy to save the record industry, menswear (and record) label Wurst fuses together the best parts of fashion and dance music. The brainchild of NYC nightlife mainstay My Cousin Roy (aka Roy Dank) Wurst was originally conceptualized as a limited edition record label which produced a series of heavily edited versions of obscure disco, punk funk and Chicago house tracks. However, Dank always had fashion on the brain, and much like his aesthetic muse Vivianne Westwood, he sought to create the perfect aesthetic to go with his eclectic taste in music. Working closely with friends and collaborators, Dank set out trying to source the best materials he could find to create classic Americana casual wear with a distinct European flair. When describing his meshing of influences, Dank explained to A Continuous Lean:
“Much like the original Wurst Edits series, the approach to both the clothing and the music is a curatorial endeavor, and the design as well as the pieces and releases themselves reflect this attention to detail, as well as this American sense of irreverence.”
So far the line has garnered comparisons to eponymous men’s label Band of Outsiders, and though the website is still under construction, I have no doubt with the recent steam building around contemporary men’s wear that Wurst has yet to see the best. Additionally, later this month psfk.com will be covering the (capsule) show NYC, a twice yearly showing of best in contemporary slightly-off-the radar men’s clothing- and finding out what trends the fashionable male can expect in the coming year.
