Image: Simulating a Supernova

By Nicko Margolies on August 3, 2009

This stunning image is a simulation of what happens on the inside of a dying star. The galactic process known as ‘entropy’ is how physicists calculate disorder and the universe is generally progressing towards greater entropy. The supernova simulated in this image hopes to expose how entropy spreads during the explosion.

The colors in the image represent varying levels of entropy and is the production of a supercomputer at the Argonne National Laboratory trying to visualize this incredibly complex phenomena. Head over to Flickr if you want a higher resolution copy of this rendering of a supernova.
