In an extreme bit of experiential marketing, and to celebrate Candy Land’s 60th anniversary, Hasbro transformed San Francisco’s winding Lombard Street into a life-size version of the board game.

Two teams of children competed in a round of the game, those from UC San Francisco Children’s Hospital versus Friends of the Children. The reward waiting at the finish line was dessert by Debbie Does Cakes.

  1. Does anyone think it’s a little messed up to allow Hasbro to take over public space like this? What unbranded space is left in America? I understand that CA is facing economic hard times but that doesn’t make privatizing public space any more acceptable. What’s the next step? Billboards on national monuments? Leave public space public.

  2. Nathan,
    I guess it’s not a party until there’s a pooper.

  3. what do you mean by “take over”. they were literally only there from 10am to noon. the street is completely back to normal.

i work as a tour guide in san francisco and i have to say i loved the fact they candylanded the street up. people visit our city to see strange things like that.

  4. and, if i can add, lombard street is used for nothing BUT random acts like candyland, or our annual “bring your own big wheel” race. the purpose of lombard at a time was to make things easier on horses… nowadays, its purpose is to be weird and attract visitors.

again, candyland helped quite a bit.

have you ever been to san francisco?

  5. yes i think it’s a little messed up to allow

  6. spell dessert right.

  7. I have to agree, this is what people come to San Francisco for. People drive down that street everyday for no specific reason. It’s not like traffic flow or the city was affected in some great irreperable way. Plus, it was a nice day for kids who are sick and in a hospital setting, to be able to get out on a SF morning and have a fun fantasy day with treats.
