The Brainchild of the Council of Fashion Designers for America, Vogue, and a group of fashion icons including Anna Wintour and Diane Von Furstenburg, NYC Fashion’s Night Out is a one-night only event designed to encourage shopping by turning NYC into a kind of retail Mardis Gras. On September 10th, participating stores will stay open till 11pm, and retailers are encouraged to create festive events and deals for the event. On the event’s website you can see a PSA from a number of celebrities, explaining the importance of keeping retail (and hence the fashion and publishing industries) alive through your patronage. While many are skeptical of whether the fashion industry is worth saving, there is no doubt it plays an important role in the NYC economy- from jobs, to import and export business, to tourism. To sweeten the deal, select retailers will be hosting blow out parties, including Bergdorf Goodman who will be offering up a celebrity-filled line up of events all night.
