Where some people see crisis, others see opportunity. The three partners of Super Cool Market, a new clothing store in the Vila Madalena neighborhood in São Paulo, fall into the latter category .
The business model (which drew inspiration from the Buffalo Exchange) may not be new, but makes a lot of sense: premium clothes at a reasonable price, which can get even more affordable if you’re willing to trade in some of your own clothes.
For those interested in quick cash: they evaluate what you brought in and pay you immediately- if your clothes are in good condition and reasonably new. Super Cool Market’s focus is recycling fashion, not vintage articles.
Pieces considered unfit for the store or that remain unsold over a period of one month are donated to charity. Each month the market chooses a different organization to assist.
They also sell new clothes at reasonable prices, through partnerships with up-and-coming fashion designers, for clients that want to pay for quality instead of brand names.
The idea is to promote the exchange of clothes while reducing waste and unnecessary production.
The store also features a multi-purpose space where small concerts, classes, and photo/art exhibitions take place. The goal is to create a flow of interesting people, generating buzz and revenue. It’s been working so far.
