On September 7, the James Dyson Award- an honor created to engage exceptional design, industrial design and engineering students- will be given out to the individual who best designs “something that solves a problem”. The winner receives a prize of £10,000 pounds, as well as a donation towards their alma mater’s design engineering department.
Here are 5 of our favorite contenders for the prize…
1) WheelStep (Denmark): A device that enables wheelchair users to overcome small barriers and level differences in public places.
2) Prio Paper Cast (USA): A flat pack splint for disaster response that combines low-weight, ease of installation, and easy triage identification within a folding paper cast.
3) Automist (U.K.): An automatic fire suppression system designed for the kitchen, where 60% of domestic fires originate (in the UK). Automist utilizes a water-mist to extinguish fires- a proven technology on ships and in factories.
4)Pressure Alert From An Endotracheal Tube (U.K.): A device that acts as an adaptation for an endotracheal tube, and its adjoining components (such as a “cuff” and “pilot” balloons) which are used during anesthesia. The “pressure alert” allows anesthetists and surgeons to better judge if the patient undergoing surgery is breathing correctly.
5) The Contortionist (U.K.): A foldable bike that fits entirely between the circumference of its 26inch wheels when it folded up.
