A Box Life: Tracking the Story of Cardboard Boxes

By Dan Gould on September 24, 2009

A Box Life tracks the life cycle and use of cardboard boxes. Each participating box has a unique QR code and tracking number on it which can be used to follow the story of where the box has travelled from.

The program was started by the Columbia Sportswear company, who originally offered their customers the option of receiving their order in a reused box. In just over a month 66% of Columbia’s orders were being shipped out in reused boxes. To further encourage this practice, they launched the A Box Life website.

People can track their box’s progress on A Box Life (www.aboxlife.com), share pictures on a Flickr group and tag relevant stories with the hash tag #aboxlife on Twitter posts.
