As kids in the US head back to school to start the new academic year, Ypulse has a nice summary of back-to-school marketing campaigns that worked. Some of the standouts include J.C. Penney, who this year have a microsite for teens along with a Facebook page, and Kmart who have their Schoolebrity Sweepstakes site which offers students the chance to win a range of prizes. However, Staples’ Facebook page, which centered around the theme of collecting school supplies for needy students stands apart from the rest. Apparently, they had no social media campaigns till this year.

The site rightly mentions the number of celebrity-focused campaigns and wonders whether they will really have long-term impact, and says that brands that encourage sharing among youngsters, like Nike ID’s iPhone app which allows youngsters to customize their shoes and share it with friends before buying it, are the way forward.
