In New York this week, people waited in line for a glimpse of what can only be described as a goth meets Alice In Wonderland themed girl’s boudoir.
Amid all the complete and utter chaos that was yesterday’s Fashion’s Night Out, Anna Sui’s pop-up shop for Target (featuring designs inspired by characters on Gossip Girl) might have faded into the background of all the fashion Bacchanalia. However, there was no sign of that as people waited in line throughout the day for a glimpse of what can only be described as a goth meets Alice In Wonderland themed girl’s boudoir.
The top floor, which is dedicated to the more high-end merchandise, is adorned with disco balls and peacock feathers, with the garments themselves are heavy on velvets, black, satin, and lace – all trademarks of Sui’s previous work, but redone for mass market. Downstairs the wait is considerably more, with clothing also tending to run in the basement area, price wise. When I asked a pop-up associate how the store was doing she told me that the space had been consistently mobbed since opening, and had even been visited by some of the cast of Gossip Girl- there to try on the very garments they had inspired.
Overall, the store felt less like a pop-up and more like a temporary installation, and a glimpse into Sui’s versatile creativity.
