HighlightCam: Low-Cost Surveillance

HighlightCam is an online service that enables you to set up a web cam for any sort of personal use- and automatically monitors the video each hour, putting together a short highlight reel that shows the most active portions of the accumulated footage.

No software installation is needed, and everything is stored for viewing for up to 24 hours. Although most of the features on HighlightCam are free, you can pay $8.99 (USD) for a “premium”  membership, which lets you view the footage for up to 2 weeks.  You can also arrange to be alerted via email if there is a movement in the video that goes above a certain threshold.
