Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod are actually part of a different continental shelf to the rest of the domestic US and this means the geology – which is more similar to South America’s – stands out when you are there. At a recent visit we were taken by the bright colors and speckled patterns in the rocks and pebbles in the beach. We thought some of you out there might be interested in seeing a few of our finds taken with our iPhone.

The biggest difference in the geology in the islands and cape is because they are in effect giant glacial sandbars — otherwise know as end moraines. So you get this great mix of stuff scraped from across New England and dumped there.
