Public Transportation Comes to Dubai

The Arabian Gulf’s first metro system was launched in Dubai this past Thursday to much fanfare.

In a region where many rely on their cars for transportation, it will be interesting to see how public transportation is adopted by nationals and expatriates. Much like its neighbors in the Gulf, Dubai has been  attempting to diversify its oil-dependent economy for some time. The emirate-city has come to be seen by many as a leader in forging the Gulf’s way to more sustainable infrastructural development.

You can follow developments on this new system on www.kippreport.com and www.arabianbusiness.com.

  1. I think Dubai’s overarching move to create a more diversified economy is smart. After having lived in the Gulf, I wonder how some countries will continue to sustain their lifestyles and economy when demand for oil is severely reduced by innovations in the energy sector. What will become of them if they do not follow the example of Dubai?
