Jack Bresnahan believes that anything that ends up in a landfill is bad design. With this in mind, the recent graduate of Northumbria University created a set of nine biodegradable plastic lids that turn old tin cans into different kinds of household containers. Leftover cans can now be saved from the trash, and be transformed into a soap dispenser, vase, desk organizer and more.

But after I’ve turned 6 cans into usable household articles… What do I do with the other cans? They still will be coming. And the cup I use to store my tooth brush, or the soap dispenser I already have… Should I throw them away? Good intention, but such ideas just won’t do it. Ever.

Well, I like the idea. The intention of trying to help reduce trash is great. Very innovative.

It’s not about the cans, it’s about the things NOT being produced that you would ordinarily need for the uses being fulfilled by previously used cans.
