We have covered Foursquare previously, but yesterday we discovered a new feature that better tailors Foursquare to user’s personal needs. Foursquare is now making real-time recommendations based on your current location.
You may be wondering: how is this different? Previously, Foursquare sent you updates based on where other people were. Now, you can also receive updates based on where you are. So if you’re walking down a street and there is a great sandwich shop just a block away, Foursquare will send you a recommendation to check it out. This was a natural step — users will be more likely to value location-based recommendations in real-time from real world or trusted online friends.
It will be interesting to see how Foursquare balances the need to monetize its recommendations with our needs to trust their relevance (time and place).

Likewise have had this feature for sometime — but maybe it was just more obvious due to the density of suggestions in NYC?

Re financing… maybe if people mention they’ve been prompted by 4sq they can get a % off whichever service they’re led to? Providers then pay a fee to 4sq? Who knows, there’ll be a way eventually, the more a product/service is mentioned as available, the more it causes a conversation. Get people talking.
