Melbourne’s Ceres Environmental Park

In the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick lies a long-standing beacon of sustainable living. The Ceres Enviromental Park is a community-driven project dedicated to sustainable design and living. Two market gardens produce a large range of organic foods and seeds, and are often used for farm education. Hosting a number of environmental programs and local music performances, the park runs a cafe stocked with their own produce.

On site, the Eco House, (est 1983) is a fully functioning – (and occupied) example of enviro-friendly applications.  Constructed using low embodied energy methods, the house contains a permaculture garden utiliseing a large range of eco-innovations, such as; grid interactive PV power system, low-energy appliances, solar and hydronic heating; and a Wattworks greywater system.

Local Brunswick Bicycle Users Group also run a bike rescue station, restoring and repairing old bikes for a small annual fee.

  1. I loved the great (cheap) farmers market there! What a nice place to hang out on a Saturday morning

  2. The farmers market is a completely unique experience in a city… bit like stepping into a time warp… beautiful, organic fruit/veg grown by local people in a small village created for the day. People dressed creatively, uniquely… gorgeous space for eating drinking foods from naturally home grown products… chickens, goats walking around, cows mooing…. workshops to learn how to turn oil into fuel for cars, make pots, compost, grow whatever… buy seeds, plants, books, worm farms… pay with credit card or eftpos… walk back out onto the main road catch the tram and be back in the hustle and bustle of the city in ten minutes.

A great ultra children friendly, educational, inspiring, city escape… in the city!
