New Amsterdam Market, NYC

By Piers Fawkes on October 28, 2009

The second outing of the New Amsterdam Market took place last weekend and PSFK was in attendance checking the artisinal food stands – and their wares of course. The organizers try to curate a selection of local vendors who are selling “all the makings of great home-cooked meals” including produce, dairy, meat, fish, bread and preserved foods. Each month is a theme – last weekend it was butchery and we sampled the fine food from the restaurant Porchetta, the Meat Hook butchers, local foods supplier Basis and the Marlow & Daughters store among others.

The event finely captures the food movement that is taking place in America. It’s interesting to consider the changing nature of what we want ‘local’ to mean. Grant McCracken recently wondered if the local movement had had its day but by witnessing the energy of this market I think that we’re attracted to local suppliers and producers not because of the associated low fuel consumption but because these people have passion and love for what they do which you would rarely find in a national or international corporation.
