New Label Aims to Extend the Levi’s Lifecycle

By Dan Gould on October 22, 2009

Levi Strauss & Co is taking a small step to help decrease the amount of textiles that are thrown away every year by adding a “donate to Goodwill” icon to their clothing’s care tags. By adding this suggestion, Levi’s is taking responsibility for the lifecycle of their products beyond the point of sale.

The tags will also encourage owners to wash their jeans less, wash in cold water, and line dry when possible to cut down on energy usage.

Treehugger reports on the positive impact Goodwill can have:

“As the ‘Original Recycler,’ 166 community-based Goodwills in the United States and Canada collectively divert more than 1.5 billion pounds of clothing and textiles every year from landfill by recovering the value in people’s unwanted material goods. In addition to funding community-based services, these landfill diversion programs create job-training opportunities for more than 1.5 million people a year,” said Goodwill Industries International CEO and President Jim Gibbons.
