Tele Scouter Aims to Provide Translation in Realtime

Japan’s NEC plans to launch a wearable optical device, named Tele Scouter, which projects translations of foreign languages directly on to the wearer’s retina. The product is made of a pair of glasses and a belt, which carries a small computer converting speech to text; it reportedly can also display diagrams, instructions for specified tasks, and other data.

The company is aiming to release a version of Tele Scouter in 2010, testing it first on a portion of its employees, and will be looking into using the technology in car navigation systems and video games in the future.
