A1 Architects Explores the Small House Paradigm

We’ve been intrigued by the idea of small living recently, particularly as it relates to simplicity and a rethink around luxury. Given the fact that the world’s population is shifting into city centers, this shift to considered use of space is quickly becoming a design necessity. Czech firm A1 Architects recently explored this paradigm at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague last month, creating an exhibition called “The Small House” that included multiple 1:25 scale concepts alongside one full size model.

The resulting homes represent A1’s attempt to create spaces that approach notions of small without  evoking feelings of confinement or inadequacy. One unexpected outcome of the exhibit was that the designs were often whimsical in nature, a fact that the architects attribute to “subconsciously translat[ing] childhood memories into the project such as the joy of sitting in a tree or a moment of triumph after building a bunker in the back garden.”
