Concept MP3 Player Powered By Our Strides

By Scott Lachut on November 19, 2009

We’ve been seeing a number of examples of products that make use of kinetic energy from their users – from push button-powered remote controls to rocking chair-powered reading lamps – to create innovative solutions to the problem of limited battery-life and the environmental impact of fossil fuels. Another such smart concept that hopes to seamlessly incorporate itself into our normal behaviors and routines, is the Dancepants Kinetic music player courtesy of Lithuanian designers Inesa Malafej and Arunas Sukarevicus. Adding a bit of incentive to our workouts, the device receives its power from our strides.

The pair explains the thinking behind their design:

It is a 100% interactive way to feel the value of energy on your own . During the movement of feet, kinetic energy is collected to play music. The inverse dynamism of “Dancepants” motivates you to move your feet in order to hear your beloved music. And as long as you keep running or dancing you can be sure you won’t run out of battery.

Though we’re not so taken by the name, the idea is definitely one that should be run with.
