DARPA's Network Challenge Celebrates 40 Years of The Internet With Nationwide Treasure Hunt

By Kyle Studstill on November 2, 2009

In a project aimed at exploring the evolving face of communication, networking, and shared tasks, DARPA is marking the 40th anniversary of the Internet with a team-building challenge hoping to inspire organization and coordination of groups throughout the continental United States.

The task is simple. Beginning this December, DARPA will post large 8′ red weather balloons in ten fixed, easily visible locations throughout the US. The first to submit the latitude and longitude of all ten wins $40,000.

Hopeful groups have already started to form on platforms like Mixx and Google Wave; DARPA has made the rules as simple and open as possible, so a number of other innovative solutions are sure to emerge.
