Ford’s Inflatable Seat Belts

Ford’s Inflatable Seat Belts

By Dan Gould on November 9, 2009

Ford is developing inflatable seat belts for back seat passengers (especially children) which will be an option on the 2011 Explorer. It’s a combination of a traditional seat belt and an airbag, similar to the devices found on some airplanes. These belts will only inflate if the front or side airbags are deployed, and provides additional safety for smaller passengers without the risk of injury found with standard front airbags.
