Paris Photo, the prestigious, leading global photography fair, will begin on November 19th and run through the 22nd. Currently in its 13th edition, Paris Photo 2009 will showcase photographic work from several different middle eastern countries – Iran, Lebanon, UAE and Iran – offering an unprecedented exploration of the artistic medium in these regions.
Given the current global political climate and the oftentimes polarizing sentiments that the region can elicit, it’s a rich choice of subject matter that will likely present a range of beauty and talent from the region that isn’t frequently covered by the media – as well some striking, thought-provoking and undoubtedly controversial imagery, as hinted at by this preview at Lens Culture.
This year’s Paris Photo offers an opportunity to elevate the region’s talent to the Global platform, as well as to spark a dialogue that will hopefully dull some of the stereotypes associated with the region – something that the arts seem to be better equipped to facilitate than a formal, politically charged discussion can.
This year’s exhibit is curated by Catherine David, who was responsible for Documenta X in Kassel in 1997, as well as numerous exhibitions and publications on Middle Eastern artistic expression.
