Could “Swing” Shops Be The New Pop-Up?
While it’s already been established that Pop-Up shops were the trend of 2009 (and 08), NYC retailer Scoop is hoping to up-the-ante with it’s new concept, the Swing Shop. Scoop’s 875 Washington Street outpost will change its merchandising concept six times a year, each cycle with a twist. While currently it will play host to Scoop After Dark- featuring sequined evening and dress wear, a few months from now we may hardly recognize the store at all.
As hypothesized by WWD:
“It could morph into a showcase for a handful of young, emerging designers, or something else. Open-see days, an opportunity for designers who may never have been seen by Scoop buyers to show their lines and potentially get an order, are in the works. Or when the weather gets warmer, the shop could be called Scoop Beach, or possibly a spring version of After Dark.”
It seems that Scoop is hoping to score some of the excitement that having a pop-up shop generates without any of the feeling of a bargain basement clear-out that some of these shops have conjured. While nothing is certain in the current retail climate, other concept spots like 303 Grand and Openhouse Gallery (which offer a rotating selection of offerings) give promise of a more interesting retail environment.
Regardless, shoppers in NYC are ready for a change from the blink-and-you miss it spending opportunities of 2009, to a dynamic 2010.
