Breaking Borders: Google Celebrates Freedom Of Expression

By Paloma M. Vazquez on January 11, 2010

Google has introduced the Breaking Borders Awards, honoring outstanding web projects by individuals or groups who have shown courage, energy and resourcefulness in using the Internet to promote freedom of expression and democracy.

They announced a plan to work with NGO Global Voices and with Thomson Reuters as part of the Breaking Borders conference in Berlin this past November, with the end goal of celebrating and raising awareness for individuals and collectives using the Internet to exchange political ideas and viewpoints, encourage involvement in and protection of democracy – and to stand up to those who censor information.

The winners will be those who are making a real difference. Closing date for submissions is February 15. Details on how to apply and the opportunities to join the award committee can be found on the website.
