Toyota Unveils Video-Game Inspired Hybrid Concept Car

By Dave Pinter on January 11, 2010

The 2010 Detroit Auto Show began today with the first batch of press unveilings. Toyota debuted a newish concept based on an earlier Lexus version shown this past year in Frankfurt. This concept called the FT-CH  is interesting because the goal was to design a hybrid vehicle aimed at a younger audience. Think of the FT-CH as a younger sibling to the Prius. The designers took inspiration from classic 8-bit videogames like Contra, Megaman and Super Mario Brothers to inform the car’s styling. You can see the pixelated effect applied to the front driving lights.

No firm decision has been made if the FT-CH will see production but the car does make sense. Toyota has been looking for ways to develop the Prius brand and this concept would likely fit as an entry level option.

Toyota had created a new Sustainable Mobility website showcasing prior hybrid and plug-in technology projects. They have already posted a video of the FT-CH launch from this morning.
