According to new findings from market research group The Nielsen Company, Australians top the list of “Average Time Spent Per Person on Social Media Sites”, with an average of 6.52 hours per month given to sites like Facebook and Twitter.  The United States came in second, with it’s citizens allocating about 6.09 monthly hours to online socialising.  This figure may reflect Australia’s geographical isolation internationally and state-wise – due to the incredible distance between cities.

In terms of sheer numbers of online social networkers, the US takes the prize at around 142.1 million users during the research phase, Japan following with  46.6 million.  In total ten countries were investigated for the research over the month of December 2009; including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Switzerland, German, France, Spain and Italy.
