
PSFK attended DorkBot’s event last night at Soho’s Location One. At the event, Jie Qi spoke about her work with “Paper Computing”. She describes her project as a book that combines traditional pop-up book mechanics which are enhanced by paper-based electronics such as conductive fabric, conductive paint, resistive paint and copper tape.
Completed throughout summer 2008 with her MIT partners Leah Buechley (of the Living Wall project) and Tshen Chew, this book functions much like a pop-up book, but adds a dynamic level of interactivity using basic principles of electricity and programming to enhance the book’s appeal.
While one might be inclined to imagine how the book could lend itself to publication and mass production, Jie Qi seems to be more eager to discuss how her work paves a way to teach basic programming and electrical engineering by having students make things.
