Open Source Washing Machine Project-Rethinking The Way People Wash Clothes Across The World

The Open Source Washing Machine Project was created by students from the École Supérieure d’Art d’Aix-en-Provence of France. The project’s objective is to develop affordable alternative washing technologies based on the unique economic, climatic and cultural contexts of different countries.

From their official site:

The open source washing machine project aims to rethink the way we wash clothes around the world, in accordance with economical, sociological, cultural and environmental aspects. Most of the people in this planet, mostly women, wash clothes by hand in harsh conditions related to poverty, lack of sanitation, water or energy.

As part of this project, a prototype of a washing machine was built using only bamboo, bicycle parts and a solar panel connecting to a motor.
