The Social Studio: A Refugee Community's Creative Hub

The Social Studio is an Australian-based refugee fashion collective that designs and creates garments from recycled or excess manufacturer materials. Working out of Collingwood, Victoria, the group formed in December last year to ease the isolation, unemployment and education difficulties of newly arrived refugees.  A central meeting place for the refugee community to establish friendships, the studio provides access to counseling, legal advice, driving instruction and tutoring; also offering training in clothing production, retail and hospitality through their fashion business and cafe. The range is available for custom-built mobile carts found around Melbourne, intended to “promote social inclusion, community and vitality throughout the city”.
