A new data visualization tool from GE and Pentagram’s Lisa Strausfeld helps home owners visualize their appliances’ energy consumption. The tool starts off with showing all the energy consuming devices in the form of a grid. The grid can be arranged in a few different ways to show how much energy a device uses in watts, dollars or gallons, or what one kilowatt hour yields for that device, or ranking each device to show at a glance and making it easier to know which device to unplug. If an appliance is Energy Star compliant, it will even show how quickly the Energy Star option pays off.

Strausfeld says this about the objective behind this interactive tool.

Energy consumption in the home is relatively opaque. But by attaching some new stigmas to old, “gas-guzzling” appliances, our hope is that Americans become as familiar with kilowatt hours as they are to degrees Fahrenheit.
