iPad arcade cabinet built out of cardboard

ThinkGeek posted an iPad arcade cabinet as an April Fool’s joke this past year, but gamer Hideyoshi Moriya actually did build just such a cabinet out of cardboard and hardware — you plug the iPad into a dock, and then you can control software with the joystick and buttons via an Arduino board.

Hollowed Out iBook Is The Best Possible iPad Dock

This mod comes courtesy of a Japanese Apple fan (translated version here), who got tired waiting for the perfect keyboard accessory. Instead, he hacked together a solution using an old iBook. He calls is the iPad In iBook. While this falls short of the ClamCase, there is the tangible benefit of making this yourself and having it right away.

iPad inside a Macintosh Classic

The Macintosh Classic mod will be better suited to your more discerning, old school tastes. As you might expect, there’s not a lot involved in this one — just some gutted internals and an opening on the side that lets you slip in an iPad, which magically fits just where the old CRT used to be.

DIY from iPhone 2G stand

Cody Agenten found an iPhone 2G dock. A little work with a Dremel, and he discovered an iPad dock within it. Michelangelo would have been proud. By shaving down the sides of the dock in line with the grooves made for the iPhone, Cody repurposed his iPhone dock into a little number that’ll not only work fine as a stand, but will also charge the iPad at the same time, using the same 10-watt AC adapter as the iPhone 2G.
