Art Objects Made From Human Ash

By Naresh Kumar on June 14, 2010

Dutch designer, Wieke Somers has created objects out of human ashes by means of rapid prototyping or 3D printing. Her new project, Consumer or Conserve, evaluates the notion of second-life and through her creations, she asks if we would become more attached to consumer products knowing they are made from human ash.

One of her creations is the ‘Birds and Toaster‘ which symbolizes life and death, with the bird taking rebirth out of its own ashes and the toaster signifying this incineration. The tray holding the objects has a plaque with information about the deceased person whose ashes were used to make them.

Somers’ project is part of the ‘In Progress’ exhibition running at Grand-Hornu Images in Belgium.
