Twitter Introduces Promoted Trending Topics

By Naresh Kumar on June 17, 2010

Twitter has launched a new advertising strategy on its popular microblogging platform. Promoted Trending Topics appear at the bottom of Trending Topics with a yellow badge to draw users’ attention to it. The first such topic is Toy Story 3, promoted by Disney/Pixar. Just as with Promoted Tweets, Twitter’s first ad revenue model, Promoted Trending Topics function the same as regular Trending Topics; clicking on it takes a user to a search results page to see what people are saying about the topic, in this case, about Toy Story 3. Buying the Trending Topic also gives Disney/Pixar a Promoted Tweet at the top of the stream.

Techcrunch quotes a Twitter representative on Promoted Trending Topics:

As we have always said, we plan to test different advertising and promotional models in these early stages of our monetization efforts for both user and brand value. As part of this effort, we are testing trends clearly marked as “promoted” for an undefined period of time.
