Flipboard: Social Magazine Offers A Personal Touch

By Elyse Lipman on July 22, 2010

Flipboard, a new iPad application aiming to become your personal newspaper, promises to make the digital reading experience interactive, personalized, and further connected to your online friends.

At first glance, the most intriguing aspect of Flipboard is, you guessed it, the flipping.  Just open the Flipboard app on your iPad and start practicing that old flick-of-the-wrist move to turn the pages.  Turning the iPad rearranges the layout of the page and further invites you to click on and enlarge the text of appealing articles.  With all the physical tapping and sliding and turning of the device, the experience of using Flipboard almost simulates the reading a traditional print magazine.

Beyond the fun and shiny surface, however, Flipboard runs on pretty sophisticated software. It uses your social networks like Facebook and Twitter to pre-filter the articles you see.  Not only does it aggregate articles that pique your personal interest, Flipboard also informs you what your friends are reading, and shares with you their tweets and relevant Facebook updates.

The free Flipboard app is now available to download from the App Store.
